Gdansk University Professor’s Lecture

On 8 June 2026, a public lecture entitled “EU Social Policy” was held at the Gori State University, delivered by Ms. Monika Tomaszewska, Full Professor and Head of the Department of Labour Law at University of Gdańsk. The visit of the Polish professor to Georgia was organized within the framework of the Jean Monnet Chair “EU Social Justice”, implemented by Gori State University.
The public lecture was formally opened by Mr. David Kvernadze, Chancellor of Gori State University, Professor Tsiuri Duruli, Head of the Department of Teaching Process and Professor of the Jean Monnet Chair, and Professor Ekaterine Kardava, author and JM Chair Holder.
Prior to the lecture, Professor Tomaszewska met with Mr. Zurab Zurabashvili, Vice-Rector of Gori State University, Mr. David Kvernadze, Chancellor of the University, and Ms. Marika Sherazadishvili, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Business and Law. During the meeting, the distinguished guest was presented with symbolic gifts bearing the official insignia of Gori State University.
Professor Tomaszewska’s lecture focused on key dimensions of EU social policy, including the foundations of EU labour law, challenges and practices related to its implementation at the national level within EU Member States, the jurisprudential standards developed by the Court of Justice of the European Union, and selected cases illustrating the practical application of EU social and labour law.
During the discussion session, students of Gori State University (Ketevan Karelishvili, Otar Mghebrishvili, Aleksandre Sadaghashvili, Mariam Tvauri, Mariam Champuridze, and Maia Karelishvili) actively engaged with the speaker through a series of analytical questions. Their inquiries addressed a broad range of topics, including human rights protection, national experiences in the transposition of EU labour law, the balance between social and economic policies, labour migration, and other issues.
The event was attended by a total of 73 participants, including 56 female and 17 male attendees.
As part of the visit, Professor Tomaszewska toured the Gori State University, including the University’s Polish Room and the Jean Monnet Chair Office. She was introduced to the history and academic development of the University. Furthermore, within the framework of a cultural programme, Professor Tomaszewska and the academic staff of Gori State University visited several historical and cultural landmarks in the region.
